From Plastic to Purpose: Why I Started EKOE

Until 2019, I never gave much thought to the fabrics in my wardrobe. Like many, I believed that wearing recycled polyester was my way of helping the planet, and keeping plastic bottles out of landfills felt like a simple, sustainable choice. Over 80% of my clothes were polyester, and I felt good about it.

That changed when I became pregnant. During an antenatal class, a midwife casually mentioned, “Check the label. Newborn clothes should be 100% cotton.” Her advice stuck with me. Why did fiber choice matter for something as simple as a baby’s onesie? Were some fabrics unsafe?

My training as a PhD biochemist wouldn’t let the question go. I soon uncovered the world of microplastics: tiny particles shed from synthetic fabrics like polyester – even recycled polyester – that we end up breathing in, eating, and absorbing through our skin. The more I learned, the more I realised these everyday plastics and things like PFAS and endocrine disruptors were woven deeply into our lives.

I shifted to plant-based fibres, determined to make safer choices for myself and my family. But this transition hit a snag when I travelled to India that September. The UV index was relentless, and while I wanted sun protection, most UPF (UV-protective) clothing I found was made from synthetic, plastic-based materials. Facing a choice between sun protection and exposure to plastics, I realised I wasn’t willing to go back.

Years working in fashion e‑commerce had already shown me how limited the industry’s version of “sustainability” really was, and combining that experience with my scientific background is how the idea for EKOE was born. The path was anything but straightforward. It took countless prototypes and setbacks. Navigating UV testing standards, fabric certifications, dye safety, and the never-ending search for the perfect blend of comfort and ethical manufacturing. But we got there.

Our name EKOE (pronounced ee-koh) blends “eco,” reflecting our commitment to the environment, and “echo,” reminding us that every choice has a lasting impact.

We invite you to join us as we create the world's first sun-safe fashion without plastic.
