How EKOE Achieves UPF50+ (Without Chemicals or Synthetics)?

At EKOE, our UPF50+ protection doesn’t come from chemical coatings or synthetic fibers - it comes from nature, design, and colour.

Here’s how we do it:

• Fiber Choice: We use bamboo Lyocell, which naturally block UV rays thanks to their dense fiber structure.
• Weave Density: Our fabrics are tightly woven to create a physical barrier against UVA and UVB rays - no plastic, no coatings needed.
• Colour Depth: All our sarongs are dyed in rich tones using GOTS-approved, AZO-free dyes.
• Zero Synthetics, ever: We avoid polyester, nylon, and even “recycled” synthetics, which can shed microplastics and lose protection over time.

Are clothes really made from plastic? Why does EKOE avoid polyester even recycled polyester?

Yes! Most “sustainable” clothes still hide synthetics like polyester, Lycra, or spandex. Even “recycled” plastic is still plastic. Recycled or not, polyester traps heat, sheds microplastics, and can release toxins when exposed to sun or sweat. We don't play that greenwash game.

How is the sarong UV-protective?

Our sarongs are made from bamboo, which has inherent UV-resistant properties. Paired with our clever weave design, they offer lightweight, breathable sun protection. Every print is independently tested for UPF by SGS labs and meets the BS EN 13758-1:2002 European Standard for UV protective clothing, so you can wrap up without worry.

Does checking clothing labels really make a difference?

Absolutely. Most brands sneak in plastic (like elastane, nylon, or spandex) even in “natural” blends or use polyester threads. At EKOE, we keep it real what’s on our label is what’s in our fabric: 100% natural, breathable, and plastic-free.

How can one sarong replace multiple pieces of clothing?

Because one piece can do it all. Wrap it like a dress, skirt, shawl, scarf, or beach cover-up. You get to decide the vibe because single-use fashion is out. It’s lighter than a jacket, cooler than full sleeves, and way easier to throw on when the sun’s out and your skin needs cover, without overheating.

Is it only for the beach or vacation?

Nope. It’s for brunch, errands, airports, poolside hangs, and even breezy workdays (yes, really). If you’ve got skin, the sarong fits in.

Will it make me sweat more?

Quite the opposite. Our bamboo fabric is lightweight, breathable, and naturally thermoregulating. That means it keeps you cool when it’s hot, unlike synthetic UV clothes that trap heat.

Can I wear the sarong at evening or night?

Of course you can. Style it your way and ta-da, and your new look unlocked. Our sarongs aren’t just UV-protective, they’re sunset-ready too. Watch our styling videos or invent your own look. From morning light to moonlight, we’ve got you covered.

What size is the sarong?

Our sarongs are one-size-fits-most and measure 165cm x 135cm the perfect size for endless styling options.

What is UPF? Is it the same as SPF?

Not quite. SPF measures how well sunscreen protects you from UVB rays (burning). If it’s labeled broad-spectrum, it also protects against UVA rays (aging + deeper skin damage). UPF, on the other hand, measures how well fabric blocks both UVA and UVB. Think of sunscreen + UPF clothing as your full toolkit for protection not just one tool.

I wear sunscreen religiously, why do I need UV-protective clothing?

We love that for you. But sunscreen fades, sweats off, and needs constant reapplying. UV-protective clothing adds a physical layer of defense that doesn’t wear off.

Why do I need to protect my skin from the sun?

Because UV exposure is the number one cause of premature skin aging and can lead to serious health risks.

I don’t care about the UV Index, why should I?

Because your skin does. The UV Index tells you how strong the sun's rays that day are just like you’d check the weather before stepping out, it’s smart to check UV.

I already wear long sleeve cotton, why do I need this?

Because cotton and linen on their own offer very low UPF (usually under 5). That’s not enough to block harmful UV rays. Our bamboo fabric, on the other hand, is lab-tested for proper sun protection, and it feels just as soft and breathable.

I am a person of colour, do I really need UV protection?

Yes, you do. Melanin does offer some natural protection, but it’s not enough. People with darker skin tones can still experience sun damage, premature aging, uneven skin tone, melasma, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer and it often goes undetected until later stages. Your skin deserves protection, no matter your shade.

What are other ways I can protect my skin?

We here at EKOE love to say shade, cover, and sunscreen. Wear UV-protective clothing. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ and reapply often if under the sun. Avoid peak sun hours (10am–4pm) when UV is strongest.

What protects you deserves protection too.

Your EKOE sarong is made from soft, breathable, plant-based fibers with no plastic, or synthetic coatings. To help it stay beautiful, protective, and vibrant over time, please follow these care instructions carefully.

1. Wash gently, like you would wool or silk (Always check the detergent label before use)

• Please hand wash cold, or on delicate cycle

• Use a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent (ideally one made for wool, delicates, or silk)

• Do not use bleach, fabric softeners, or enzymes (Harsh or corrosive formulas can strip colour, damage fibers, and reduce Sarong’s life)

2. Wash separately or with dark colours only

3. Avoid soaking or wringing

4. Never tumble dry

5. Line dry in full shade

6. Use low heat iron if needed

You chose a sarong that’s kind to your skin and the planet.

Treat it with care, and it’ll protect you beautifully for many seasons to come.
